ACICLOVIR (5%) topical ointment is a prescription medication used to treat fever blisters caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). ACICLOVIR (5%) topical ointment is also used to treat cold sores caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). ACICLOVIR (5%) topical ointment is a antiviral medicine. It stops the virus from growing. This medicine is available as a cream, ointment, and pledgets. Pledgets are little dry cotton balls.
Use ACICLOVIR (5%) topical ointment as soon as you have signs of a fever blister, such as tingling, itching, soreness, or reddening of the skin. Do not wait until the fever blister breaks open.
ACICLOVIR (5%) topical ointment comes in a tube or a jar. Use a fingertip to apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected skin. Do not rub it in. Let the ointment dry for 5 minutes before you put on any clothing. To protect the affected skin, wear sunscreen when you are outside.
You usually apply acyclovir 5% topical ointment two or three times a day for seven days.
If you have a cold sore, you usually apply acyclovir 5% topical ointment four times a day for five days.
Do not use more than the recommended dose.
Do not use acyclovir 5% topical ointment if you are pregnant. It may harm the unborn baby.
