Vaxchora (cholera vaccine recombinant live oral) is the only vaccine available in the United States for protection against cholera. The vaccine is a live, attenuated oral vaccine that is given as a single dose. It is made from a strain of Vibrio cholerae that is not harmful and does not cause diarrhea. The vaccine works by protecting against the toxins that V. cholerae produces. It is effective in both adults and children.
The vaccine is not recommended for people who are allergic to yeast, or who have a weakened immune system. It is also not recommended for pregnant women or people who are breastfeeding. The vaccine is not 100% effective, but it can help protect people who are at risk for cholera.
