What is a fecal occult blood test (FOBT)?
A fecal occult blood test is used to detect microscopic, virtually invisible amounts of blood in the stool. the doctor uses a test strip to indicate the presence of this blood in the stool. If blood is found, it could be a sign of a digestive system problem such as an abnormal growth, a polyp or a type of cancer. So, if the test comes back positive, then your doctor will have to perform an exam, usually a colonoscopy, to identify the source of the problem. As a preventative measure, people over the age of 50 should have this test done yearly.
